🍪Is a calorie really just a calorie? Well, yes….but, also no. Definitely not. It’s a bit of a paradox. Let me tell you a short story to illustrate.

🌮Take a man – Doug, we’ll call him – who works a pretty active job and so his maintenance calories are around 2500 calories. He wants to lose a bit of weight, and so puts himself in a deficit of around 500 calories and tries to eat 2000 cals each day. –
But Doug doesn’t care much about how he gets those cals (the approach on the left). He eats whatever he feels like, carefully tracking to make sure he doesn’t go over, but due to lack of planning and the convenience of it he ends up mostly eating fast food, empty calorie foods that aren’t filled with much fiber, nutrients, or protein.

🥩What happens? Well, it’s kind of what you would expect. Doug would still lose some weight, at least for a time, but he would feel really crappy doing it and in the long run would likely not be able to sustain the weight loss due to an unhealthy body and rampant cravings, and because he lacks good habits would gain all the weight back.

🥕But what would happen if Doug took an entirely different approach (the right side)? He still tracks calories, but plans ahead well, stays nice and hydrated, eats a whole lot of fruits and veggies and protein at every meal, and allows a bit of room for some ice cream and pizza and a beer or two out with the guys on the weekends. This time Doug would be successful because he has put in good habits to get a lot of nutrients, fiber, and protein. Long-term success is his.

🍓Doug would wake up feeling like an entirely different person (peep the bitmojis lol) if he took the right side approach, rather than the left side. That’s the difference between just counting calories and making your calories count for you. The gap between the two is vast and it makes all the difference.

🍕So no, not all calories are created equal.

Much love Fam,
Marcus
